Navasana — Boat Pose
Watercolor by D. V. W.

Navasana, Boat Pose, calls for strength and balance. Just as the mighty fish Matsya, an incarnation of Vishnu, guided Manu’s boat through a great flood to safety, your body is your vessel-nurture it, appreciate it, and trust that it will carry you where you need to go.

Balasana — Child’s Pose
Credit to my friend Douglas Whipple for the watercolor illustrations for my calendar.

Balasana or Child’s Pose encourages surrender, trust, and stillness. Hanuman, devoted to Rama, embodied humility, courage, and unwavering faith, acting not for self-gain but in service. In this pose, we mirror Hanuman’s dedication, bowing to a purpose greater than ourselves.
Reflection
Around spring, I usually join a couple of friends for a cemetery cleanup at the Pioneers’ Cemetery in Martinez. I haven’t heard from the organizer yet, but reading my interpretation of Child’s Pose reminded me of Sevā, Sevā the practice of selfless service. I invite anyone reading this, regardless of the time of year, to join me in giving some of yourself to something else.

Adho Muka Savasana — Downward Dog
Credit to my friend Douglas Whipple for the watercolor illustrations for my calendar.

Adho Mukha Svanasana or Downward Dog reminds us of the guidance and support we receive on our path to liberation. Much like Bhairava’s loyal dog, who led him in search of forgiveness, dogs protect Dharma Dharma is the right way of living. and help us navigate the ups and downs of our journey through karma. Karma is our actions and their consequences.
Reflection
I’ve been creating a yoga calendar that explores the beliefs, traditions, and myths behind different poses. It’s a personal interpretation but the process has been both fun and insightful. Currently, Downward Dog or Adho Mukha Svanasana is my favorite. The stories and symbolism surrounding Adho Mukha Svanasana, in particular, have really resonated with me.
Also, I’m determined to get my heels down to the mat.

I’m currently in enrolled in the Diablo Valley College Yoga Teacher Training taught by Dr. Milissa Bradley. Shout out to Dr. Milissa Bradley and cohorts 2, 3, and 4. It’s been an incredible experience. The program covers anatomy, philosophy, teaching methodology, and yoga techniques. The coursework, while rewarding, is also physically and mentally demanding. It has expanded my understanding of yoga, beyond the physical practice, as a discipline that requires immense dedication from teachers and practitioners on and off the mat. There is a lot of effort, passion, and work yoga teachers do behind the scenes.
If you ever have the opportunity to enroll, or take a class from Dr. Bradley you should—even if you have no interest in becoming a yoga teacher. You will grow in so many unexpected ways that will benefit your life.
My Yoga
March 15, 2020
I started practicing yoga during the pandemic. At the time, I had a regular calisthenics routine and worked out several times a week, but I still felt off — physically, mentally, and emotionally. My mom had recently completed chemotherapy for breast cancer, I had gone through a breakup, and most of my friends were isolating. It was a difficult time, and my usual ways of coping weren’t enough. That’s when I found yoga.
